SCOLIOSIS

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, causing uneven posture, muscle tension, or discomfort. While commonly diagnosed in children and teenagers, many adults also experience scoliosis due to age-related changes, injury, or muscular imbalances. Curves can range from mild to more noticeable, affecting how you move and feel daily.

Common Signs of Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders or hips

  • Visible sideways curve or tilt of the spine

  • Muscle tightness or stiffness on one side

  • Back or neck pain, especially after long periods of sitting or standing

  • Ribs appearing more prominent on one side when bending forward

  • Limited spinal flexibility or discomfort during movement

  • One leg appearing shorter or uneven clothing fit

Causes of Scoliosis

  • Family history or genetics

  • Muscle imbalances and poor posture habits

  • Age-related spinal degeneration (adult scoliosis)

  • Previous injuries or neuromuscular conditions

  • Repetitive uneven loading or asymmetrical movements

How Can Chiropractic Care Help with Scoliosis?

At our First Fruits chiropractic clinic, we provide general management and supportive care for scoliosis patients. While chiropractic care does not “cure” scoliosis or fully straighten spinal curves, it can help reduce discomfort, improve spinal mobility, and support better posture and function. Our care approach may include:

  • Gentle spinal and pelvic adjustments to improve joint mobility

  • Soft tissue and muscle release techniques to ease tension

  • Postural advice and personalized movement coaching to improve balance

  • Referral for spinal X-rays when necessary to monitor changes safely

Our goal is to help you feel more comfortable, move with greater ease, and manage scoliosis symptoms through tailored, non-invasive chiropractic care.

  • Genetics and growth factors (especially in adolescence)
  • Muscle imbalances and asymmetric posture
  • Age-related spinal changes (degeneration, disc issues)
  • Postural habits or repetitive asymmetrical loading
  • Previous injuries or neuromuscular conditions

Many people with scoliosis hope for a “cure” that completely straightens the spine. However, even surgery rarely achieves full correction. Chiropractic care does not aim to cure scoliosis by straightening the spine. Instead, it focuses on helping you manage symptoms, improve mobility, and support overall spinal health and function.

What Chiropractic Care Can Offer

  • Pain Relief: Scoliosis often causes back pain and muscle tightness. Chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitative therapies can help relieve discomfort by improving joint movement and reducing muscle tension.
  • Improved Mobility and Function: Gentle spinal care supports easier movement, helping you stay active and manage daily tasks with less stiffness or fatigue.
  • Support for Curve Stabilisation: While chiropractic care doesn’t aim to fully straighten the spine, studies suggest it may help slow curve progression by improving posture, muscle balance, and spinal mechanics.

What We Can Help With

At our clinic, we focus on realistic, patient-centred goals—reducing discomfort, improving function, and helping you manage scoliosis over time through tailored and gentle care.

  • Releasing muscle tension and improving posture
  • Enhancing spinal mobility and joint function
  • Alleviating compensatory pain in the back, hips, or neck
  • Supporting confidence, movement awareness, and quality of life

Whether your goals involve slowing curve progression, feeling more comfortable, or maintaining mobility, our care plans are adapted to your current stage and needs.

If you or your child is living with scoliosis, we’re here to help you feel empowered—not pressured. Our role isn’t to promise a perfectly straight spine, but to walk alongside you with evidence-based care that helps reduce discomfort, improve daily life, and promote long-term well-being.
